HUG YO’ MAMA! IT’S MOTHER’S DAY

As we celebrate this Mother’s Day, do something special for Mom. Hug her! Yes, mothers love hugs from their children. Why? Because it is a special way to show her affection.

“Hugging is the ideal gift. Great for any occasion, fun to give and receive, it shows you care, it comes with its own wrapping and, of course, it is fully returnable. Hugging is practically perfect. No batteries to wear out, inflation-proof, nonfattening, no monthly payments, theft-proof and non-taxable.”  (Source, see footnote below)

Why should we show respect and affection for our mother’s? Because scripture tells us it’s the right thing to do. Besides, who better understands you than your mother? What’s the reason why she does? She is the one person that suffered the most that you might be here. Without Mom, you wouldn’t be who you are! She deserves at least one day a year to be the focus and attention of your love. She deserves that special hug today, so let her know.

There’s also another reason to love your mother. It’s one of the Ten Commandments. It’s also the only commandment with a reward. Exodus 20:12 tells us “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” The reward that we receive is ‘long life.’ Do you want to live to a ripe old age? Be sure that you love your father and mother. Honor them and give them the respect that they deserve for they give up a lot for you.

How so, you ask? Let’s look at some of the stories in the Bible about mothers. Three come to mind very quickly: the mother of Moses, the mother of Samuel, and the mother of Jesus.

The mother of Moses loved her child so much, that she defied Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt and the enslaved nation of Israel to save her son (Ex 2:1-10).  Her son was used by God to save the Nation of Israel from bondage and guide them to the Promised Land.

The mother of Samuel, Hannah, was barren and deeply troubled. She prayed that God would give her a son (1 Sam 1:1-28). She promised that he would be dedicated to the Lord and be his servant. God honored her prayer and gave her a son. She was obedient and took her young son to Eli the priest so that he might be trained and a servant of the Lord. God blessed Samuel. He became the last judge of Israel , helped Israel to choose their first king, and the one to choose Israel’s greatest king – David. Hannah’s prayer and obedience brought great honor to her nation.

Mary was the mother of Jesus.  Because she was the Lord’s obedient servant, she was chosen to bring into life the Son of God, the Savior of the World (Lu 1:26-56).  By her obedience, her son brought God’s promise to King David of an eternal kingdom to fruition. By her obedience she endured the stigma of being pregnant and unmarried to bring to mankind the answer that overcomes mankind’s sin nature. By her, we have God’s answer to the fallen nature of sin that we are all born with.

From these stories we see that God intended that mother’s bring to life the good things that God wants to use to bless us. If God intended that mother’s be a blessing, maybe we should take the time to show them honor, respect and love. We can do this best by looking at her with loving eyes, opening our mouths to express our gratitude, value her by listening to her wise counsel and always embrace her with open arms.  When we do this, we express God’s love to our mothers as HE intended. So, hug yo’ mama today and let her know you love her as God intended!
